A Healthy Start Builds a Hopeful Future

April 7 is marked annually on the global calendar as World Health Day—a day designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) to encourage renewed reflection on the importance of physical, mental, and social well-being for all people across the globe.

Since the WHO’s founding in 1948, World Health Day has become an international milestone in the health calendar, each year highlighting a vital and timely issue at the heart of global health.

In 2025, the focus of World Health Day is Maternal and Newborn Health—a critical topic that, in light of alarming global statistics, demands more attention, investment, and public awareness than ever before.

Concerning Global Statistics

  • Every year, nearly 300,000 women lose their lives due to pregnancy or childbirth-related complications.
  • Over 2 million newborns die within the first month of life.
  • Another 2 million babies are stillborn.

This translates to one preventable death every 7 seconds in this domain.

Threats to Maternal Health

Studies have shown that severe bleeding during pregnancy is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality. Other major threats include conditions such as high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, heart and kidney diseases, preeclampsia, and eclampsia.

Prenatal Care Essentials

Prenatal care plays a crucial role in safeguarding the health of both mother and baby. Key components of such care include:

  • Proper nutrition
  • Use of essential vitamins and supplements
  • Regular medical check-ups
  • Periodic lab testing
  • Avoiding tobacco, alcohol, and harmful substances
  • Adequate rest
  • Effective stress management

World Health Day 2025 Theme

In line with this, the WHO has announced the 2025 theme: “Healthy Start, Hopeful Future.” Governments, health organizations, and stakeholders are called upon to intensify efforts in preventing avoidable maternal and newborn deaths and to prioritize long-term women’s health within national health strategies.
