World Hypertension Day

World Hypertension Day is marked on May 17th to raise awareness about the importance of monitoring blood pressure and to highlight the global issue of high blood pressure, which affects around 1 billion people worldwide. High blood pressure occurs when systolic blood pressure is consistently above 140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure is consistently above 90 mmHg. This condition is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, kidney problems, and premature death. Typically, high blood pressure has no symptoms, but it can be managed and its complications can be prevented through regular blood pressure checks.
Since 2016, the CDC and international partners have been collaborating to develop innovative strategies for the prevention and management of high blood pressure, aiming to improve heart health globally. It is important to get tested, be aware of your blood pressure numbers, and take steps towards a healthier and longer life.
